Still Running After 39 Years: What a Fertigation Pump Can Teach Us About True Sustainability
At I-Feeder Global Dosing Systems, we recently experienced a moment that perfectly encapsulates our mission: delivering technology that endures.
A customer sent us one of our fertigation pumps for servicing. Nothing unusual — until we checked the serial number. This pump was installed in 1986. That’s 39 years (and counting) of precise dosing, season after season, in tough field conditions.
Why Does This Matter?
In agriculture, efficiency is everything — higher yields, lower waste, healthier soils. Modern ag-tech brings remarkable innovations, from smart sensors to AI-powered irrigation.
But we rarely ask: how long will it last?
We’ve grown accustomed to tools and systems designed for planned obsolescence. Software that stops updating. Electronics that fail after a few years. Machinery that’s cheaper to replace than to repair.
Yet true sustainability isn’t just about carbon footprints or soil inputs. It’s about technology that stands the test of time.
What Makes This Possible?
Companies that create long-lasting technology — in agriculture and beyond — often share core values:
- Thoughtful design: Engineering for decades, not just minimum lifespan.
- Quality materials: Robust steels, seals, and electronics that handle real-world farm conditions.
- Modular construction: Replace a part, not the whole system.
- Commitment to service: Keeping expertise and spare parts available to maintain systems for decades.
This mirrors the famed Japanese philosophies of monozukuri — the spirit of craftsmanship and pride in making things exceptionally well — and kaizen, the continuous improvement that ensures each generation gets better and lasts longer.
The Bigger Question
Are we designing today’s ag-tech to last as long?
Will our children be able to repair it — or will they be forced to replace it?
As we work toward more sustainable global food systems, maybe one of the simplest, most powerful shifts is to build technology that truly endures.
Share Your Story
Have you come across legacy equipment still performing beautifully on your farm or project? Machines that earned their place year after year, far beyond expectations?
We’d love to see your photos and hear your stories. At I-Feeder Global Dosing Systems, we’re proud to not just build what’s next, but to build it so well it might still be working in 2050.
Because sustainability isn’t only about what’s new. Sometimes, it’s about what’s still here.
